 Mississippi
House Bill 695

 Makes Non Nurse
 Midwifery Illegal

Political Action Infor for mothers and others

Click here for a study that identifies
how maternity care by lay and professional midwives dramatically reduces maternal and perinatal mortality, while providing care that is more cost-effective than medicalized childbirth, while having a comparable safety record.

Mississippi House Bill 695, would repeal a provision of the Medical Practice Act that acknowledges midwifery as from the separate from the practice of medicine, thus protecting lay midwives from being prosecuted. HB 695 makes all forms of non-nurse midwifery illegal and includes face harsh legal penalties and jail sentences for the practice of direct-entry midwifery.

House Bill 695 would deny women access to professionally-trained birth attendants for Planned Home Birth, since nurse midwives do not provide care for PHB

The bill repeals the current exemption that midwives have from Mississippi’s medical practice act and includes stiff penalties for ANY midwife practicing who is not a nurse-midwife. It has already sailed through the Mississippi House, so urgent action is needed TODAY.

It is particularly important that members of the Senate Public Health committee (listed below) hear from their constituents, telling them to vote NO on HB 695

Tell them that you do NOT support making the care of Certified Professional Midwives illegal. CPMs are specially trained to deliver babies in out-of-hospital settings and are an important part of the maternity care system.

If you live in or have midwifery or doula clients in Mississippi, start making calls and sending emails to your STATE SENATORS ONLY and forward this to anyone you know who lives in the state (calls can be made to home and office numbers both).

Get your ducks in a row:

Contact a legislator, a journalist, or a blogger
Tell your friends and family to do the same....

We don't want evidence-based maternity care to go the way of the gooney bird!
